What is Content Management?
Web Content Management needs are fundamentally and inherently content management needs. Web needs are inherently business needs, and these needs do not exist in isolation from larger business imperatives. This requires any Web solution to meet both business and Web needs. Organizations have overwhelmingly asked for comprehensive and integrated content solutions that solve content creation, editing, approval workflows, publishing, and compliance assurance issues. Why? Because it's proven these are needed to deliver ROI, and in many cases are required by law.

Content Management is a set of processes and technologies supporting the evolutionary life cycle of digital information. This digital content life cycle consists of six primary states: create, update, publish, translate, archive and retire. For example, an instance of digital content is created by one or more authors. Over time that content may be edited. One or more individuals may provide some editorial oversight thereby approving the content for publication. Once published that content may be superseded by another form of content and thus retired or removed from use. Therefore information typically passes through this lifecycle for a finite period of time. A content management system (CMS) provides the necessary infrastructure for multiple persons to effectively contribute content and collaborate throughout these lifecycles.

Typical aspects of a CMS include:
  • Content contribution by business users for reducing technical staff help
  • Content access rights for control
  • Content approval for structured workflow processes
  • Content archiving and versioning for backups
  • Content templates for consistent output
  • Content check-in/check-out services for distributed users

Whether your requirements are that of a middle, large or enterprise class system ThatFish has proven expertise in appraising the relevant vendors and technology to match your requirements.
